January Team of the Month: Dublin Lions women’s basketball

JANUARY was a month to remember for Clondalkin side Dublin Lions when they claimed the Women’s Division One National Cup, in their maiden season as a Division One Club.

The team are only playing in the top flight in women’s basketball and they defied all the odds to claim the National Cup crown.

MVP Trudy Walker scored 35 points and had 26 rebounds to help the Lions to a 80-68 win over Phoenix Rockets in the title showdown in the National Basketball Arena.

It was a dream first National League campaign for the Clondalkin side and they led this final from start to finish to overcome a strong Phoenix outfit.

Lions overcame St Paul’s Killarney in the semi-finals in what was an impressive performance.

“January was a great month for us” said Dublin Lions coach Rob White.

“The girls did very well.

“We got a great run in December.

“We got a good run of nine or 10 games which was great.”

“But to win the national cup was something we never dreamed of so it was great for the club and the girls”.
