CCTV cameras have been installed to ensure the construction of modular homes in Cherry Orchard is protected from any further attacks.

Up to 24 modular homes are currently being constructed on green space at the junction of Cherry Orchard Avenue and Cherry Orchard Drive.

In September, the site was destroyed by joyriders, and council staff were intimidated and threatened by youths, as they attempted to remove a burnt-out stolen car over the course of a Bank Holiday weekend.

The Echo understands two local criminals attempted to provide security at the site and when they were removed, joyriders then smashed into the railings and wrecked the surface, causing considerable damage.

Dublin City Council denied allegations that men with criminal backgrounds were hired for security detail at the site, saying responsibility for security rests with the contractor.

Up to €35,000 for new CCTV cameras in Cherry Orchard were allocated as part of the Dublin budget surplus last year.
Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan welcomed the addition of the CCTV cameras.

“They are top-quality cameras and can’t be vandalised – gardai have access to them 24/7 and they are a great addition for the area,” said Cllr Doolan.
