Citywest transit hub for refugees and asylum seekers at capacity

THE Citywest transit hub for people seeking refuge in Ireland is operating at full capacity, as reports emerge of no space in State-accommodation for new arrivals.

On Wednesday evening, the Department of Children said that anyone arriving in Ireland would have to stay in Dublin Airport, unless they have somewhere to stay.

Individuals and families fleeing war in Ukraine and asylum seekers from other countries stayed in the old terminal building in Dublin Airport last night.

It is understood that Citywest is accommodating more than 1,000 people and is at full capacity, with the Government now forced to seek an alternative transit hub in the Dublin region.

Due to capacity issues at Citywest, food has had to be sourced from outside suppliers in addition to the catering available on site.

The Echo also understands that people arriving at Citywest on Wednesday were left on buses due to capacity issues, with those in the centre sleeping on chairs and the floor.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that temporary accommodation in Gormanstown will open on Monday to accommodate Ukrainians coming to Ireland.

The Taoiseach is due to meet ministers today to discuss the accommodation shortage for Ukrainians and others seeking protection in Ireland.
