Clinical Filipović downs Peamount in Champions League

DESPITE two late goals by Eleanor Ryan-Doyle, irreparable damage had already been inflicted on Peamount United as they fell to a 5-2 defeat at the hands of ZFK Spartak Subotica when the two sides met in the UEFA Champions League this morning.

Tijana Filipović proved the proverbial torn in the side of the Newcastle outfit as her four-goal haul effectively killed off the challenge of the Newcastle outfit when they met in the Dutch city of Enschede.

The Serbian international accounted for all three of her side’s goals in the opening half, propelling them in front just nine minutes into the tie before a further brace five minutes before the break left Peamount with a huge mountain to climb.

That mountain became a lot more steep for James O’Callaghan’s side just nine minutes into the second period when Filipović fired home a fourth for the Serbs who have won their domestic league for the past nine seasons.

Alice Kusi was then rewarded for her part in setting up Subotica’s fourth goal when she rattled the net to make it 5-0 for the Serbs just after the hour mark.

In fairness to Peamount, they kept going and ensured they would not draw a blank at least when Ryan-Doyle – currently joint top scorer in the National League – found the target by way of a sublime free kick on 72 minutes after which she doubled her side’s tally in the closing minute of regulation time.

While it was a brave finish to this tie, the current National League leaders will be disappointed at the manner in which they lost especially when considering the fact that they took Glasgow City to penalties before losing out 5-4 in last season’s Champions League.
