Clondalkin Animal Aid: “We haven’t seen anything this bad in a while”

Clondalkin Animal Aid has made a plea for support to help a neglected dog after the pooch was brought to them last week in horrific condition.

The Toy Poodle was discovered in Clondalkin by a passer-by who first thought it was a lamb rather than a dog.

According to Rachel Johnston of Clondalkin Animal Aid, the poor poodle was covered in Mange and fleas, and had also sustained lacerations to his body.

Now being looked after with love and care, the rescued dog needs substantial treatment, and a plea has been made for support and donations.

Rachel said: “He was found at the shops at Cherrywood. The girl originally thought it was an injured lamb!

“She asked us to take him and we haven’t seen anything this bad in a while.

“(He is) covered in Mange with significant hair loss as a result, scars all over his bear skin, deep lacerations caused from what looks like a knife or blade.

“His teeth are rotten right to the root, with an extremely bad gum, which would obviously cause him a lot of pain.

“(He is) absolutely walking with fleas, they were basically eating him alive.

“What’s left of his fur was matted in places so badly a scissors wouldn’t cut through it.”

Since being taken in by Clondalkin Animal Aid, Rachel said he has shown a huge improvement, but a lot more still needs to be done.

She said: “He cowers so easily, and found it very hard to trust at first.

“When we gave him food he was unsure about whether to approach us or not.

“He just kept away from us and lay down like he’d given up on life.

“Within a couple days he’s come on so, so much.

“His tail is wagging when I walk in the room & he runs to me when he sees me with food.

“He needs extensive dental treatment to fix his teeth and gums, he needs to be completely shaved and his skin treated for the fleas and he needs, and then antibiotics for Mange and his overall condition.

“Then he’ll obviously need the usual neutering, vaccinations & working.

We’ll get a more detailed quote from the vet but we are looking at approximately €500+ to get him to good health. “
