Clutter in the California Hills

AFTER the recent opening of a brand new People’s Park in Ballyfermot, residents are perplexed as to why the existing California Hills “suffers with a lack of funding and maintenance,”.

Rossmore residents claim contractors do not pick litter up before cutting grass “shredding anything with the tractor” and also claim a mattress laying in the park for weeks, was pushed under the tree line.

“I find it hard to believe in the current climate of house shortages that they built another park within 500 yards from two parks, with another two a short distance walk away, and that’s not including the Phoenix Park/ Memorial Park,” said a Rossmore resident.

“The new park has great facilities but unfortunately California Hills is out of sight, out of mind.

“Drug dealing, antisocial drinking and the beloved motorbike/quads are always in there. You can imagine what’s left laying around the park with no litter picks and the tractor grinding up everything in ankle-high grass.”

Pictures sent by the resident to The Echo show a mattress under a tree, and a subsequent picture last week showed the mattress on fire in the park, with Dublin Fire Brigade responding to the scene.

“We as residents have complained to Dublin City Council about no litter picks before cutting the park. We’ve also brought it up at the parks meetings for the past six years.”

The Echo asked Dublin City Council about claims that the tractor shredded litter and the mattress pushed under a tree.

A city council spokesperson said: “The area was cleaned up and the mattress was removed by parks staff in LE Fanu depot.”
