Commercial enterprise fails to agree terms to develop land beside Labre Park

A COMMERCIAL enterprise and Dublin City Council failed to agree terms for potential development at land adjacent to Labre Park.

Following an expression of interest in early 2017 from a party interested in acquiring the site, DCC’s Chief Valuer entered into negotiations with the party.

However, DCC said it was not possible to reach agreement with the interested party on terms and conditions.

In February 2017, People Before Profit Councillor Hazel Norton proposed the idea of the waste land beside Labre Park to be allocated for a Traveller horse project – passing a motion in Dublin City Council.

Cllr Norton was seeking an update on the proposal and the expression of interest at a December area committee meeting, along with information on potential development plans at the land and the old community centre in Labre Park.

“Are these plans in conflict with the motion passed by this council that no additional waste management facilities would be permitted/developed within the Dublin South Central area,” she asked.

In response, DCC said the proposals are subject to a motion to be discussed at a full council meeting in the near future, and “as such, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

A DCC spokesperson said: “Consequently, it has not been possible to bring a report on the potential disposal before the area committee. Access to the development site is extremely limited due to its location between the canal, Kylemore Road and Labre Park and while consideration has been given to an option of providing access over the site of the former community centre no decision to do so has yet been made.”

Cluid Housing are currently managing a redevelopment project in Labre Park, which is due for completion by the end of 2018, and includes building new accommodation units, refurbishing existing units and the provision of a community facility.

DCC said the old community centre is not part of the redevelopment of Labre Park, but they are currently assessing options for the future of the centre.
