Commercials clinch Championship crown against Sarsfields

COMMERCIALS saw off Lucan Sarsfields by the narrowest of margins to clinch the Minor 'D' Hurling Championship title in O’Toole Park on Sunday.

Indeed, the Rathcoole side won out 2-7 to 1-9 in a very hotly  contested game played in difficult underfoot conditions.

Commercials celebrate winning the Minor D Hurling Championship

Lucan started well and hit the opening score through Eoin Gormley only to see Commercials respond with a goal as Oran Murphy mopped up a loose ball that resulted from a fine save by keeper Jake Mooney.

Yet, Lucan worked their way back and two points from Evin Dowling saw the sides level again after 10 minutes.

The exchanges were even up until the 20th minute, when Alex Hanley made a great run through the Commercials defence and finished to the net from a tight angle.

Points from play from Jack Morris and Cathal O Luasa kept Commercials in touch, but it was Lucan who led by three points at the break.

Commericals stepped up a gear all over the pitch after the restart as Cormac Cullinane led a defence that restricted their opponents to three-pointed frees from Dowling throughout the second half.

At the other end Adam Drewett stepped up to score a long range goal and together with some frees to edge Commercials back in front by the 50th minute.

Lucan did created good goal-scoring opportunities, but failed to capitalise on them, and their cause was not helped when outstanding centre-back Cian Duffy was shown a second yellow card.

Still, a point by Dowling reduced the margin to the minimum, but  Shane Clohessy produced point blank saves in the closing stages, which combined with resolute defending, helped secure a nailbiting win for Commericials.
