Community school make handmade unique box for TCC chain of office

Tallaght Person of the Year is one of the longest community led person of the year awards in Ireland. It began in 1984 and is now in its 39th year.

Due to Covid restrictions, the annual recognition awards went online for two years, but will be back in-person this Autumn.

After the success of partnering with the Tallaght Training Centre in February on the community covid time capsule, Tallaght Community Council (TCC) wanted to harness the wealth of local talent in Tallaght to create a new, bespoke and handmade presentation box for the chain of office.

TCC heard glowing reports of the quality of the woodwork team in Tallaght Community School and reached out to discuss collaborating with them.

Tallaght Community School were very keen to participate in a joint project and be part of the community recognition awards.

“It was a pleasure to work with Tallaght Community School, and in particular Gary. He was very generous of his time and talent to create something practical, but very special. All future holders of the office will get to wear the chain with pride, but also store the chain in a handmade, unique box made in Tallaght,” Liz Kennedy, volunteer Chair of TCC said.

Gary Kenna, a woodwork teacher in Tallaght Community School, stepped forward to collaborate on this project. He handmade the wooden box himself and was also able to use a new tool to brand the lid of the box with the Tallaght Community Council logo. This added an amazing finishing touch to the bespoke box.

Gary said: “I was delighted to support the community council and the awards by creating a handmade wooden box for the chain of office. The awards are an important annual event and it is very nice to think the chain will now be kept safe in a bespoke handmade box from Tallaght Community School. I wish them many years of use with the wooden box.”

Tallaght Community Council will be launching the Tallaght Person of the Year 2022 later this year in September, with the award ceremony taking place in November.
