Coronavirus: Retailers move to reassure public

In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, retail bodies have moved to reassure the public that supply chains are operational and shops open.
Retail Ireland, which represents many large retailers in Ireland, have urged consumers to “behave responsibly” when doing their shopping.

“While there has been significant elevated demand for certain non-perishable grocery products, supply chains are functioning as normal and were well-placed to respond,” said Arnold Dillon, Retail Ireland Director.
“However, retail distribution networks are not designed to deal with bulk buying on a widespread basis.
“It is important that consumers behave responsibly and don’t buy more than they need.
“Retailers are working with their suppliers and monitoring consumer behaviour to avoid any shortages.”
In recent days, widespread bulk buying has been reported nationwide, as uncertainty around coronavirus sees members of the public stock up on food.
Having experienced an influx in sales in the past number of days, Lidl Ireland said that they will be putting “product quantity limitation” in place on selected products.
“Due to our robust and agile supply chain we’re confident of maintaining supply of key lines as consumer demand remains high and our stores are continuing to receive deliveries as planned,” said Lidl Ireland said in a statement shared on its social media channels.
“Lidl is in constant contact with suppliers and partners as the situation develops.
“We’ve put product quantity limitation in place on a select few product lines to ensure availability for as many customers as possible, and we would ask that customers respect these measures.”
SuperValu Ireland also moved to reassure customers that all 223 of their stores nationwide are open to serve their communities.
“We are experiencing high volumes of demand but please bare with us as we continue to keep delivering stock daily to all our stores,” SuperValu said through a Facebook post.
“Our retailers, staff in stores, drivers, ware-house staff and suppliers are all going above and beyond to help minimise any disruption.
“We are very conscious of the needs of all families and in particular the vulnerable people in the communities, towns and villages we serve every day.”
