Could the Glenview Gnome work in a roundabout way for €50k public art commission?

WHEN South Dublin County Council invited proposals for a ‘highly visible, sculptural artwork’ at the Glenview roundabout, we’re not sure this is what the local authority had in mind, reports Mary Dennehy.

This gnome, who may have strayed from a local garden, has set up residency on the busy roundabout, which lies on the N81 between Tallaght Village and the M50.

How he got there, nobody knows.

However, some believe he may be putting himself forward as a contender for a €50,000 public art commission planned for the site.

As reported in The Echo last month, the council is inviting proposals for a sculptural artwork for the Glenview roundabout – allocated €50,000. The commission for the roundabout is part of a large-scale infrastructure project along the N81 and is one of three commissions on the route.

According to the council: “This initial project at Glenview roundabout should be a distinctive inviting gateway piece that marks the main avenue of approach into Tallaght town centre, the business and residential heart of South Dublin County.”

The commission has received mixed reactions from Echo readers online.

While some welcome the introduction of a public art piece, others questioned the price tag and the impact a sculpture may have on visibility at the busy roundabout.

Maybe this little gnome ticks all the boxes?
