Council depots could be used for infill social housing

PLANS for the consolidation of Dublin City Council’s depots could lead to the site of the Garryowen Depot in Ballyfermot being used for infill social housing.
The consolidation plans have come about as the council stated that a number of their depots are “inappropriately located in the context of surrounding development and the council’s strategic planning policies.”

It is proposed that the Sundrive Road Depot in Crumlin will be used for infill private residential development, as the site is very small, while it is proposed that the Davitt Road Depot in Inchicore will also be used for private residential development, as there is already a concentration of social housing in the area.
In reference to the Garryowen site, Sinn Fein councillor for Ballyfermot-Drimnagh, Daithi Doolan, said: “If there’s no job losses [as a result of the closure of the depot] and if the council’s service is maintained, because local people pay for this service through taxes, then I don’t have a problem with the site being used for social housing.
“If the depot is going to close then I want it kept in public ownership and meeting the housing needs of local people.”
