Council show support for free parking for cancer patients at Tallaght Hospital

SOUTH Dublin County Council is writing to Tallaght Hospital in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s call for free parking for cancer patients.

Earlier this month, the Irish Cancer Society wrote to elected representatives in the Tallaght area seeking support for its Park the Charges campaign, which saw the charity call on hospitals nationwide to introduce free parking for cancer patients under treatment or a designated family member.

In response to the charity’s appeal, Tallaght South Sinn Fein councillor Louise Dunne tabled a motion in council chambers on Monday, which asked that the Tallaght Area Committee write to Tallaght Hospital management calling for efforts to be made in relation to free car parking for cancer patients.

Speaking with The Echo, Cllr Dunne, whose motion was passed, said: “I visit Tallaght hospital every now and again, so I know how much parking can cost.

“I can’t imagine what’s coming out of the pocket of a cancer patient who is down there all the time for treatment.

“The motion has been passed so a letter will be sent to the hospital seeking free parking or even to get started a plan to lower the prices for cancer patients.”
