Cross looking to take final step after Fittipaldi Trophy success

TALLAGHT’S Anthony Cross will bid to take the final step on the road to a third straight Formula Vee Championship title this Saturday.

The defending champion moved close to such a feat following another fine performance in the last outing in Kirkistown when he captured the Emerson Fittipaldi Trophy.

Lining up on pole position for that meet, he was eventually overtaken by Jack Byrne who began to open up a bit of a gap as Cross struggled to cope with the pressure of Philip Sheane who was setting faster times, but could not get by the champion.

And when the safety car was deployed after Michael O’Callaghan crashed, it served as a reprieve for Cross who was suddenly back in the reckoning for victory.

And he took complete advantage, producing a better drive on the restart than Byrne to take the lead into Turn One after which he staved off the pressure from Byrne and Sheane to take the chequered flag.

“That was a tough race” admitted Cross.

“Jack got passed me at the hairpin and then his car started letting oil out and began to cover the front of my car and front wheels.

“I had to drop back a bit as I was losing grip when turning in and had to access the situation.

“Then the safety car came out so I knew I would have only one chance to get back past Jack so I had to judge the right distance to get the jump which I managed to do and got by at Debtor’s” he explained.
