Crumlin make it a double in National Championship

CRUMLIN Boxing club made it a double at the National Junior Cadet Championship Finals in the National Stadium on Friday.

While William Hayden stopped Adam Healy of Setanta in the second round for the 65kg honour, Jamie Edwards edged past the challenge of Michael McDonagh of 3 Bridges BC in the 72kg decider.

Crumlin also went close to earning a treble at this year’s com-petition, but 40kg Tom Conroy was pipped by Olympic’s Thomas Donovan after having put in a great display.

Going for his first All-Ireland title, Edwards turned in a very impressive performance in the opening two rounds of his final, and, while he did tire somewhat in the third, he had done enough to make certain of the prize.

Hayden’s win was most convin-cing as he dished out a standing count to Healy in the opening round before serving up another two in the second and bringing an early close to the bout.

The title marked Hayden’s fifth national triumph and was little more than he deserved especially given that he had to contend with the sad passing of his grandfather during the championships.

Both he and Edwards can now look forward to competing in the European Schoolboy Champion-ships in Croatia next month.
