Crumlin on the double

CRUMLIN Boxing Club’s drive for the IABA ‘Club of the Year’ Award moved up a gear after they made it a double at National Junior Two Finals in the National Stadium on Saturday.

While Karl Sheridan beat Ratoath’s Kieran McPartland 4-1 in the 50kg class decider, his Crumlin clubmate William Hayden chalked up no less that his 10th national title when he saw off the challenge of Shane O’Gorman of St Malachy’s in the 66kg final.

A former European Schoolboy gold medallist, Hayden has mopped up everything on the domestic scene so far in his young career.

Delighted with his performance at the weekend, Crumlin Coach Bra Brady told The Echo “William won the first round on all the judges card, but his opponent came forward more in the second and that was a lot tighter, but William still won that.

“In the third round, his opponent came on really strong and Willo actually lost that, but he had done enough to win the title.

“He’s never been beaten on homesoil and he won gold in the European Schoolboys. He has only two defeats on his record and they came on the international stage” he said.

Sheridan, meanwhile, had to battle back from a slow start to land his title against McPartland.

A winner of the National Cadets two years ago, Sheridan was competing for a first All-Ireland in his own age division, but found himself playing catch-up after the opening round.

“Karl actually lost the first round 3-2 even though I thought he boxed very well” said Brady

“Usually he likes to press, but it was his oppon-ent who was coming on strong in the second round, trying to swamp him, and Karl had to use his jab.

“He used it well, turning and coming back in and catching him a few times. He won the second round 3-2 so it was all even heading into the final round.

“One thing about Karl is, he gives it 100 percent in training and so doesn’t run out of steam. He really opened up in the third round and caught him about half a dozen times with the jab, and that’s something the judges could clearly see” he added.
