Daly delivers in tough night for Crumlin BC

IT WAS not the best return Crumlin Boxing Club have enjoyed in championship finals, with Courtney Daly the only successful fighter among the four representatives they had in Friday night’s National Under 22 Finals in the National Stadium.

While Clodagh Greene, John Joe Nevin and Luke Hill were all stopped short of titles in their respective divisions, clubmate Daly completed her march to a ninth National title when she won the Women’s 48kg class following a 5-0 victory over Smithfield’s Ciara Walsh.

This victory came less than two months after she had scooped National Senior Championship honours at the same weight.

“Courtney boxed well,” said Crumlin BC Coach Philip Sutcliffe. “In the first round she won everything. She won the second round, but took her foot off the pedal.

“In the third round she was very strong and she clearly won the contest, but she could have won by a lot more,” he stressed.

The win secures her a place on the Ireland squad that will contest the European Under 22 Championships in Russia in March, but first up will be the National Elites next month.

Another of the club’s National Senior champions, Clodagh Greene, missed out on adding the Women’s Under 22 Welterweight crown to her roll of honour after she was beaten 4-1 by Elice Elliott of South Meath.

“Clodagh’s loss was very disappointing,” said Sutcliffe. “The Crumlin camp felt she had done more than enough to win.

“Her shots were cleaner, she was tidier in and out, her jab worked spectacularly and she was the fitter of the two. The other girl was stronger, but it was Clodagh’s shots that were the ones materialising,” he said.

In the Men’s Middleweight division, John Joe Nevin suffered a heavy 5-0 loss to Olympic’s Gabriel Dossen.

“It was a disappointing result for John Joe. We thought he would have had more in the bank to win that one, but he just didn’t do enough on the night.”

Finally, it was all over for Crumlin’s Luke Hill in the opening round of the men’s Super-Heavyweight class as he was caught cold by Celtic Eagles Gytis Lisinskas.

“Luke was unlucky to get caught. It can happen, particularly at super-heavyweight, you just get tagged,” explained Sutcliffe.

Also in action in the National Under 22 Finals was Patryk Adamus of the neighbouring Drimnagh Boxing Club, but he lost out to Ballymun’s David O’Joyce in the Lightweight Final while in the Women’s equivalent Mount Tallant’s Bella Hughes came undone against Dealgan’s Amy Broadhurst.
