Dedicated alcohol development worker

Dedicated alcohol development worker

TALLAGHT has a new dedicated alcohol development worker who will be building, in partnership with the community, dialogue around alcohol consumption - in the hope of increasing people’s knowledge of alcohol and related harms through events and activities.

Anthea Carry started the new post in February and is working with the Tallaght Drug and Alcohol Task Force (TDATF) on a 12-month project – which will see Anthea work alongside the community in creating a three-year schedule of activities that encourage self-reflection and low risk drinking patterns.

Anthea’s remit is to implement the Alcohol Plan that was developed by the task force last year and over her 12-month placement will be hosting a variety of alcohol awareness event and running campaigns to increase people’s knowledge of alcohol and related harms.

Anthea told The Echo: “We’re not telling people to stop drinking but to look at their own drinking in a more responsible way.

“We’ll be encouraging people to help change attitudes that excessive drinking is the norm and to be aware of the hidden harms, which also impact on families and the wider community.

“The HSE is starting a pilot programme on the hidden harms of alcohol abuse and Tallaght has been chosen as one of the pilot locations, so we will be engaging with this as well.”

She added: “We are also linked with IT Tallaght and will be exploring how, as a nation, do we socialise without alcohol?

“I gave up alcohol for a year a while ago just to see how it would feel and I found it very hard to socialise.

“Alcohol is the main factor in a lot of our social events and we want to explore how we can change this and create new ways of socialising that does not include alcohol.”

Anthea, who is linking in with community groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, community centres, South Dublin County Council and more, is also looking to develop a four-week alcohol awareness programme for young people and parents, which would be rolled out right across Tallaght.

“We want to get people talking about alcohol, challenge the way they think about it and change mind sets”, Anthea said.

“Tallaght is a really well established community with experienced and supportive community groups and services and I am looking to engage with as many as possible over the next 12 months to get their ideas.”

Anthea has encouraged any organisation, club or group in the Tallaght area which would like to get involved or raise an idea for an activity or event to call 4649303, 087 3617744 or email anthea.carry@sdcpartnership.ie
