Delight for Dixon at Cross Country Championship

TALLAGHT AC’s Cormac Dixon triumphantly threw his arms in the air to celebrate his victory in the National U17 5000m Cross Country Championships in Conna, Co Cork on Sunday.

The Tallaght star was always to the fore in a group of seven athletes who headed the field of over 140 athletes who had to endure the challenging hilly sections and muddy underfoot conditions over the course of the 5,000m journey.

However, it wasn’t until the final 500m uphill stretch to the finish when the Holy Family Community School student in Rathcoole, showed his true strength and determination to break away from the group to claim the title with a 40m margin over his nearest rival, Connaught champion Darrah Mulrooney and Ulster champion Caolan McFadden.

And in the process, Dixon led the Dublin team to claim the Inter County & Provincial titles.

In the U19 6000m contest Shasta O’Brien from Tallaght AC bravely worked his way through the tough conditions and finished strongly to finish in 31st place.
