Gartland calls time on his playing career

AFTER an incredible 10 seasons with Dundalk, Knocklyon lad Brian Gartland announced his retirement from football this week.

Gartland, who was captain at Oriel Park, has been one of the key players for the Louth club particularly during their successful spell when Stephen Kenny was manager.

The talented centre half, who is 36 years of age, and has been recovering from a cruciate injury for much of this season, decided to call time on his career after 16 years playing professional football. Gartland said in a social media post:

“It’s been incredible. I gave it everything. I’ve loved every minute of it . . . and I’ve dreaded this day.

I gave it One Last Shot but unfortunately after the injury, the body just can’t get back and stay fit enough to do the job I love.

“Thanks to everyone who played a part, on and off the pitch, my team-mates and especially the fans. Football is nothing without them.

“The boots are hung up. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.” Gartland joined the Lilywhites 2013 from Portadown and became a key part of the Dundalk team, helping them to the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in both 2016 and 2020.

He made a total of 251 appearances for the Lilywhites and won numerous honours, including five SSE Airtricity League titles, three FAI Cups, three EA SPORTS League Cups, three FAI President’s Cups, a Unite The Union Champions Cup, numerous Jim Malone Cups and the Leinster Senior Cup.

He made his final appearance for Dundalk against Derry City in their 1-0 victory last month.
