Delight for residents as lands to be zoned for community development

SOUTH Dublin County Council have approved a proposal by Fine Gael Councillor William Lavelle to rezone lands in Mount Bellew Way from residential to open space/community.

Located between Lucan Educate Together NS and the Foster Square apartment development - the lands are zoned for residential development in the current County Development Plan.

However, after a vote taken by councillors on February 4, the lands will be zoned as open space/community in the next County Development Plan 2016-2022.

Cllr Lavelle said: “After seven years of campaigning, I am delighted that SDCC has finally agreed to my proposals to rezone the lands.

“In my view, we have enough housing in the Willsbrook Road area. We need sites for community development and land to deal with local school-time parking and road safety challenges.”

As the lands were zoned residential, parents were refused access to the site for parking/drop-off for Lucan Educate Together.

A petition to introduce safe drop off facilities and end a “free for all” parking system gathered over 200 signatures.

With 40 staff and 450 students, the lack of available parking space caused a lot of stress for the school, parents and local residents.

A proposal last year by Cllr Lavelle to rezone the lands was defeated in the council until last week’s reversal.

Cllr Lavelle continued: “I did not give-up on this campaign and I wish to thank all the other councillors who finally supported my proposal.”

“I will continue my campaign to secure provision of a safe drop-off and parking zone for Lucan Educate Together on these lands as well as working with the Council and community to see what other community uses could be provided on the site.”
