Document seeks 12 pledges from local election candidates

TALLAGHT Community Council (TCC) recently launched a new document featuring 12 pledges that they are seeking from local election candidates.

The pledges include championing a strategic and ambitious vision for Tallaght, including seeking city status for the area and “leveraging the heritage potential” of the village.

They also want candidates to pledge to secure a formal twin town partnership with a European town of culture, and to adhere to an “anti-litter agenda” in the area.

TCC wants to see a commitment to increasing intergenerational community and recreational services in Tallaght, and to agree with refusing to sell the naming rights of Tallaght Stadium.

The group is calling for candidates to support BusConnects going through TUD Tallaght instead of through the village, and for a reduction in plastic usage in the village, including a ban on election posters.

Candidates should also “secure annual budgets to protect and promote national monuments in Tallaght,” according to TCC, and “honour all Tallaght waterways” with the erection of brown signage.

The group also wants street signs to be put in place to “sort out formally the mess over Main Street and Main Road on the Road Management Office (RMO).”

TCC also wants people seeking election to pledge to support greater inclusion and accessibility in Tallaght, and for “continued investment” in TUD-Tallaght Campus.

Liz Kennedy, the vice-chairperson of TCC, said: “TCC remain active proponents of balanced development for Tallaght and building sustainable communities into the next council term.

“In addition, we have 12 specific requests for all local government candidates on local issues.

“Most candidates for the local election have declared and are canvassing.

“We ask them to kindly review our ‘asks’ and contact us to confirm what their position is on them.

“We would also kindly remind all candidates and parties of the support for a poster-free zone in Tallaght village.

“Now with a vibrant Tidy Towns community in the village, we ask all to respect the work of volunteers and not to poster the village area.”
