‘They have ruined nearly every road in Tallaght’ with cycle lanes

LOCALS have voiced their frustration at issues with parking and the installation of a cycle lane adjacent to The Edge on Avonmore Road in Tallaght.

As reported in The Echo last week, residents around Bolbrook Close have “suffered disproportionately” since road widths in the area were reduced for a cycle lane.

They have also been impacted by parking issues linked to The Edge, according to local resident and Solidarity councillor Kieran Mahon, who stated this at an area committee meeting last month.

When the story was posted on The Echo’s Facebook page on Monday, more than 50 readers commented on the story and weighed in on the issue.

One commenter wrote: “They have ruined nearly every road in Tallaght now”, while another posted: “They made an awful mess of that road, including the ramps they’re very high.”

A reader stated: “Absolutely disgraceful what they have done. Whoever designed the new layout obviously hasn’t a clue, as they have made matters worse for the residents of Avonbeg Road.”

“The whole of Avonbeg Road has suffered disproportionately,” wrote another commenter.

“Absolutely ridiculous, they didn’t need to narrow the road that much.

“The houses on Avonbeg Road facing onto the road have suffered the most.”

Another commenter referred to the impact that road narrowing on Castletymon Road to facilitate a cycle lane has had on the area.

“We’ve had two cars damaged by the new kerbs on the Castletymon Road,” they claimed.

“There is no room to drive because the cycle lane is so wide, when we went to get them repaired – the guy said every second car going into him is because of that road.”

A council spokesperson previously told The Echo, when asked about a similar cycle track installation in Aylesbury that narrowed Firhouse Road West to the annoyance of residents: “The reduction in the lane widths will not have any impact on the capacity of the road.

“The same number of vehicles can fit on it bumper-to-bumper, and there is to be no removal of right turning lanes.

“The added bonus of reducing the lane widths will also have a traffic-calming effect, speeds will reduce.

“In a neighbourhood with a large proportion of elderly people and children this can only be a good thing, especially after recent news reports regarding the number of fatalities year to date on our roads.”
