Dog owners warned of attacks

Dog owners warned of attacks

By Brendan Grehan

A TALLAGHT woman has contacted The Echo to warn other dog owners after one of her dogs was attacked by two dogs before Christmas.

Carol Kiberd’s boxer, Cooper, was being taken for a walk near Sean Walsh Park by her son when two pit bull/staff type dogs came out of nowhere and attacked Cooper.

Carol told The Echo: “It was an unprovoked attack. They just went for him. The dogs were not on a lead or muzzled. The owner, a young man, whom my son thinks was in his 30s, came over and tried to help but he wasn’t very effective.

“When he called the dogs to get away from Cooper they kept on attacking him. I don’t know why anybody would be so irresponsible as to bring dogs like that withot a lead. I’m not breed-biased.”

Carol’s son managed to rescue Cooper from the jaws of the other two dogs. Cooper then spent Christmas Eve in the vets where he got six stitches under general anesthetic at a cost of €210.

Carol said the Gardaí were unable to help as they did not have enough information about the owner and they had never seen the man or the dogs in the area before.

She said that on Friday evening, a neighbour had an encounter with the same owner at 5.30pm that evening in Sean Walsh Park.

Carol said: “Once again his dogs were off the lead. My neighbour’s dogs were lucky to escape without injury.”
Carol told The Echo that she is now quite nervous about bringing her two dogs for walks now and she just wants to warn other dog owners to be vigilant .

She said: “I’m afraid I might bump into this fellow and his dogs. I would like to warn people who are dog walkers in this area to be on their guard and watch out for these dogs, as they are extremely dangerous and will attack any dog unprovoked.

“I have no problem with any dog but I do blame the owner as he should have these dogs under control and certainly on a lead.”
