Local seniors created a time warp when they presented Drawn from the Wellier, A Dublin Miscellany.

The seniors presented the piece on Tuesday, July 9 at the Civic Theatre. Poems, songs and stories told of the personal experiences the seniors had from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Before the show, the members had been in a ten-week drama and writing workshop called Second Wind. Running every Tuesday from May through June, Second Wind had anywhere from six to 12 members a week, seven of whom presented.

Donal O’Kelly, who facilitated Second Wind, said: “I feel honoured to be involved and I feel gratitude for the people who were a part of it.”

Donal said that every week there would be new stories to hear from the members.

“It was very fulfilling for myself and for the participants,” Donal said. “It helped people remember stories in great detail that otherwise would have been forgotten.

“We were surprised at the level of detail we were able to uncover.”

Donal said that everyone in the group was over 60, and the idea was to get seniors of different ages to participate. Over the ten weeks they were able to create a lot of different pieces reminiscing on the past in what Donal described as active remembering.

The project was a combination of the Civic Theatre and The Square. Second Wind took place every Tuesday at The Square in Tallaght and the presentation of Drawn from the Wellier, A Dublin Miscellany was at the Civic.
