According to gardai, officers made the discovery when they stopped and searched a van that was disembarking from a ferry in Liverpool.

The contraband products were found concealed within different parts of the van which was driven by a Latvian man in his forties.

These seizures are part of Revenue’s on going operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes and alcohol in the shadow economy.

In a separate operation on Sunday, Revenue officers at Dublin Airport seized 8,000 ‘Marlboro’ branded cigarettes when they stopped and searched a passenger who had arrived from Chisinau, Moldova.

25 year old Romanian man appeared before Judge Brian O’Shea in the District Court yesterday, where he was remanded in custody to appear again on Friday.

The combined value of the seized products is over €9,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,500.
