€540k guide price for old post office on Main Street in village

THE former post office on Main Street in Rathfarnham village has gone on the market with a guide price of €540k.

Built in 1932, the property is being brought to the market by Bohan Hyland estate agents and is described as an investment property.

This two-storey mixed use investment property comprises a vacant ground floor retail unit with an occupied two-bedroom apartment split over two levels.

It traded as the local post office for just over 90 years until closing in 2023, and the area is now served by the post office in Nutgrove Shopping Centre.

The post office closed following the death of the facility’s postmaster, Donal Bermingham, with An Post stating they had tried to get other operators to take it over since but had been unsuccessful.

“We had advertised the contract on three occasions but to no avail,” stated an An Post spokesperson at the time of the closure.

“We also spoke to members of the Bermingham family, but they did not wish to carry on the business and wanted to regain possession of the post office property.

“That left us with no alternative but to close the office and move our customers to Nutgrove post office around 1.7km away.”

The residential space above the former post office has been occupied by a tenant since September last year.

The apartment was fully renovated prior to the tenant occupying the space in 2023 and the apartment also benefits from a self-contained side entrance and rear courtyard garden.

The apartment is let at €30,000 per annum and is c. 81 m2 with 24sq.m of space on the ground floor and 57sq.m of space on the first floor.
