By Hayden Moore

COMBAT sports took centre stage in February with Luke Keeler getting a crack at the WBO World Middleweight belt, South Dublin Taekwondo’s Emma Cahill carding an impressive gold medal win and six competitors from Newlands Taekwon-Do securing places at the European Championships.

3. Newlands European Champion Kamil Falowski

No less than six competitors from Newlands Taekwon-Do secured their places at the European Championships after securing qualification at the Irish Cup in Limerick.

1. Colaiste Bride

Coláiste Bríde powered clear in the final quarter to see off a tenacious Manor House School 64-53 and raise the Under 16B Girls All-Ireland Schools League crown in the National Basketball Arena.

The Clondalkin school came into the final quarter just two points to the good, but took off after Katie Flanagan, Aoibhin Dunne and Abbey O’Keefe hit baskets to help their side run out nine-point victors.

5. Aaron Green Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers made a telling start to the  Airtricity League season after they beat Bohemians 1-0 in dramatic fashion, Aaron Greene serving up the winner in injury time.

2. Brendan Hyland

Ellen Walshe followed up her double gold in January with a bronze in the Women’s 50m Butterfly at the Dave McCullagh International while National Centre and Tallaght Swim Club’s Brendan Hyland earned two bronze.

Hyland clocked 2:00.04 on his way to third place in the Men’s 200 Butterfly and replicated that feat in the 100m Butterfly when he finished third behind only Edward Mildred and Duncan Scott.
