AFTER a promising start to the month with the county’s finest amateur athletes putting in terrific displays across various fields, the COVID-19 outbreak cast a dark shadow over the remainder of March and ultimately the entire year as Ireland entered lockdown.

SOUTH Dublin Taekwondo (SDTKD) star Jack Woolley made a real statement of intent when he stormed to gold at the US Open in Orlando Florida.

Woolley followed up his performance Stateside with another gold medal victory, this time at the Sofia Open in Bulgaria.

3. Betty Hughes with family at The Echo Sports Awards 2018

Dublin Camogie lost a true legend with the sad passing of Betty ‘Gerry’ Hughes, who was an integral part of the county’s ‘Golden Era’ that stretched from the 1940s to the ‘60s.

2. Tallaght ACs Jennifer Hanrahan

Tallaght AC’s Jennifer Hanrahan leapt 5.55m in the long jump for bronze at the National Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships.

4. TUD Tallaght win CUFL Divison One title

TU Dublin Tallaght clinched the Colleges and Universities Football Division One crown and a return to the Premier ranks following a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over NUI Galway.

George Bates (below) and Kellie Harrington of St Mary’s Boxing Club saw their bid for qualification for the Tokyo Olympic Games put on hold after the postponement of the European qualifiers in London as a result of the Covid outbreak.
