Egan set for her return to Račice

LUCAN kayaker Jenny Egan is hoping that Račice in the Czech Republic continues to prove a happy hunting ground for her when she lines out there in the 2017 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships this week.

The Dubliner has enjoyed no shortage of success on the three occasions she has competed at the venue, winning European Championship bronze in 2015 as well as World Cup silver in 2016 and 2011.

She returned there this Monday in preparation for the start of her latest World Championship campaign with the 500m heats on Thursday.

Her 200m competition kicks off the following day with the 5000m race taking place on Sunday.

“I’ve had good memories there and hopefully I’ll be kept busy next week” laughed Egan.

“I’ve done a solid three-week block of training and I’ve just been tapering down for the last few days.

“You want your body to feel fresh and explosive because it is a very intense and physical competition.

“In the 500m, I’d love to make a B Final if not better and it would be the same for the 200m.

“My best result in the 5000m at a World Championship has been sixth [in Milan in 2015] so I’d like to improve on that.

“Hopefully I’ll feel great and everything will come together and I can finish my sprint season on a high note

“I have been pretty happy with how the season has gone so far especially when considering I have had some challenging conditions with sickness and then that shoulder trouble at the World Cup” she told Echo.ie

The competitive year does not end here for Egan as she will only be home from Račice when she heads back out to South Africa for the World Canoe Marathon Championships.

While racing takes place on September 9, the Dubliner will be there to train and prepare a week and a half beforehand.
