Elly D gearing up for new EP
CLONDALKIN woman Elaine Doyle, better known by her stage name Elly D, has always had a passion for music and has been writing songs since she was a child.
The singer-songwriter has performed in Whelan’s, The Workman’s Club and the Civic Theatre, and recently went on an Irish tour with folk musician Davie Furey.
Elly has also played numerous gigs in the German capital, Berlin, a city which she describes as being one of her favourite places in the world.
The past pupil of Coláiste Bríde, who crafts catchy electro-pop tunes, lists Elvis, Blondie and David Bowie as her influences.
Elly, who has already released two EPs, spoke to her local newspaper about growing up in Clondalkin, writing her first song as a child and plans for a third EP.
What is your best memory of growing up in Clondalkin?
The summer nights out playing with my friends on the road.
You wrote your first song at 11-years-old, can you remember what that song was like?
Yes, I can, actually. The lyrics to my first song were about flying. I suppose it was kind of a message to myself to remind me that you can do anything once you put your mind to it. I find that with most of my songs, I don’t really understand what they’re about until I finish them. They’re like subconscious thoughts that are released through my music. That in itself inspires me to keep writing and in turn I learn some more about myself. The song was incredibly similar to R Kelly’s ‘I Believe I Can Fly’. I wrote mine first though!
Do you prefer performing live or recording in studio?
I absolutely love both but there’s nothing better than locking myself away for a few days at a time and demoing songs. The whole process really excites me, and it pushes me to play other instruments too. When I write a song, it starts with lyrics and my acoustic guitar. I tend to finish the lyrics and get the structure down that way too. Demoing a song for me is just a bit more exciting. I get to really play around with sounds, try new stuff out and force myself to play different instruments. The learning is endless. It gives me an excuse to lock myself away for a few days too.
What’s your favourite thing about being a musician?
One of my favourite things about being a musician is knowing people will hear my music, it’s amazing really. You put your heart and soul into your craft and with a click of a button you can share it with the world. I’ve stumbled across some amazing bands and artists, totally by accident through the likes of Spotify and what not. Someone, somewhere will hear my music – whether they like it or not!
What’s the best gig you’ve played so far and why?
I’ve played many special gigs. I think, if I had to choose one, it would be my EP launch in The Vintage Room in The Workman’s Club. It was packed out and so intimate. It was a beautiful night.
You recently went on a live acoustic tour with Davie Furey, what was that experience like?
It was great craic. It’s so nice to go on the road with friends and play gigs night after night in different venues.
What can we expect from Elly D in 2018?
You can expect a new EP this month, along with an Irish tour. After that, I’ll be hitting the studio.
