Father of two shot in Ballyfermot named

A MAN who was shot dead on Thomond Road in Ballyfermot this morning (Sunday, January 9) has been named locally as Michael Tormey.

Mr Tormey, a 49-year-old father of two, sustained fatal gunshot wounds on the doorstep of his home during the incident in the early hours of this morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Tormey had no known links to criminality, and gardaí have yet to establish a motive for the shooting.

In a statement issued this morning, Ballyfermot-Drimnagh Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan described the murder of Mr Tormey as ‘a violent attack committed against the whole community’.

“This morning’s fatal shooting on Thomond Road was a violent attack committed against the whole community,” said Cllr Doolan.

“Those involved must be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law. Tackling gun crime must now be a priority for this government.

“I would encourage anyone with information to please come forward and contact the Gardaí.

“Both the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, must act immediately and ensure extra resources are given to this community.

“Ballyfermot has suffered too much violent crime. It is now time for this Government to prioritise policing in Ballyfermot.”

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident, in particular anyone who may have been in the Thomond Road, Landen Road, Kylemore Road or the general Decies area between 3.30am and 5.30am this morning, to come forward.

Anyone with any information in relation to this matter should contact Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
