Firemen fight for Faye

OVER €4,000 was raised at a charity car wash in Tallaght Fire Station last Sunday for a young girl with a high-grade form of cancer.

The car wash was in aid of Faye Miley, a seven-year-old girl from Rathcoole who was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour last April.

Faye’s tumour is a Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade IV, which is a high-grade form of cancer, and the prognosis is poor.

Last May, Faye had a seizure which prompted her parents, Sandra and Robert, to call for an ambulance, and a crew of firefighter paramedics from Tallaght Fire Station were dispatched to the scene.

Faye has since recovered from her seizure, but she has had a lasting impact on the Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics who treated her, and her local community.

On Sunday afternoon, a team of 35 firefighters manned a car wash in Tallaght Fire Station to raise money for Faye’s fundraising campaign, called Fight with Faye.

They washed 250 cars on the day, and Faye got a tour of the fire station and got to meet Sarah Phelan, who was one of the Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics who attended to her last May.

Commenting on the success of the day, Faye’s mam Sandra told The Echo: “Faye was delighted with it. She got to meet Sarah and we saw a lot of people we know.

“There was a steady stream of cars throughout the day, it was very positive. Everyone was having a laugh and the kids really enjoyed it.”

Sandra added that the money raised on the day, which amounted to over €4,200 “is hugely helpful, people were very generous. We want to thank everyone for their time and generosity.”

The event was organised by Tallaght firefighter Andy Young, who is a family friend of the Mileys, with the support of his colleagues in Dublin Fire Brigade.

“We’re delighted with the amount that was raised,” he told The Echo. “I didn’t set a target, because the amount that could be raised was unknown.

“But once we had the money, it felt really good and we’re very proud and happy to have raised it for Faye and her family.”

Fundraising for Faye to receive healthcare abroad, which isn’t available on the HSE, is continuing via her GoFundMe at www.tinyurl.com/FayeMiley and a golf classic and live music event next month.

While golfing spaces for the golf classic in the Palmerstown House Estate in Kildare on August 21 are now sold out, the Mileys said tee boxes are available for local businesses to sponsor.

There’ll also be an event in Palmerstown House that evening from 7pm, where attendees will be treated to live music and can buy tickets for a raffle, all in aid of Faye’s treatment.
