Football gear makes its way from Tallaght to Uganda

THREE large boxes of football club gear made its way from Tallaght to Uganda from Kilnamanagh Football Club for those living in a disadvantaged area to wear while playing football matches.

The idea for the appeal came when former coach Gerry McGovern and his wife visited the town of Bicowa in Uganda during the summer while on holidays.

“We went to one remote village, it was very poor and they didn’t have a lot,” said Gerry.

“There was a football match on and they didn’t have any gear and they were wearing t-shirts with the numbers written in marker on the back.”

Gerry said he approached Kilnamanagh AFC who generously gathered together three large boxes of football gear to send over to the people in Uganda, which they received on Tuesday, December 21.

The cost of the delivery was kindly covered by An Post and the Irish Embassy in Uganda also helped to co-ordinate the delivery of the goods.

A lot of the gear that was sent over by Kilnamanagh AFC was brand new and in a variety of sizes to make sure that there was one to suit everyone who was in need.

“They put on the jerseys and played a friendly against another town yesterday just purposely to wear the gear, they were delighted,” said Gerry.
