FORMER St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers star player, Noel Campbell has passed away at the age of 72.

It was during his five seasons with the Saints that he made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland in 1971 and would continue on to make 11 appearances for his country.

During most of that time he played his club football with German outfit, SC Fortuna Köln, helping them to promotion to the Bundesliga and becoming the first Irish man to compete in the top tier of German football.

Joining Shamrock Rovers in 1980, he made 15 appearances for the Hoops with whom he took up the assistant managers role alongside then team boss, John Giles before a short stint himself as manager in 1983.

Paying tribute to Campbell, FAI President Gerry McAnaney said: “Our thoughts today are with Noel’s wife Anne and the Campbell family.

“I remember Noel as a really good and competitive midfield player who also broke new ground for Irish football when he moved to Germany in the 1970s. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
