A PRIEST and author recently released his tenth book, ‘Best of Life’, detailing what he’s learned over his time spent in three different continents and ministering in a variety of communities.

Dominican priest Fr Vincent Travers served as the parish priest of St Mary’s Parish in Tallaght for six years while the area was quickly developing and is currently based in St Mary’s Priory.

Fr Travers took up posts in Iran, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and he worked full-time in a crisis centre for street children in New York following his tenure as parish priest in St Mary’s.

He also took up a post as the chaplain of Mountjoy Prison, and spent three years as head chaplain to the Irish Prison Service.

After his many years abroad and in a variety of parishes, Fr Travers returned to Tallaght in 2002, when he was appointed Director of the Dominican Pastoral/Retreat Centre in the Priory, and all of these experiences inspired him to write his most recent book.

Fr Travers told The Echo: “The book is called ‘Best of Life’, because it’s a commentary on life at its best.

“I’ve seen life from many different angles, having spent time on three continents and I was also chaplain in Mountjoy Prison.

“You write a book when you’ve got something to say, and this book is my life in a sketch.”

The back cover of the book features a photo of Fr Travers in the Arctic Circle, which was taken during his time serving in Canada, and it describes the book as being a reminder “that nothing matters more than our relationships with others”.

The book is available for purchase from St Mary’s Priory in Tallaght, for further information contact the parish office on 01 404 8100.
