Harold’s Cross Tallaght Musical Society brings 80’s hit to Civic stage

STEP back into the neon-lit 1980s with ‘The Wedding Singer’, a high-energy musical comedy packed with big laughs, bigger hair, and unforgettable hits. Robbie Hart is the ultimate wedding singer—until he’s left at the altar and his world is turned upside down.

When he meets the charming Julia, sparks fly, but true love proves anything but simple.

Bursting with heart, humour, dazzling dance numbers, and a soundtrack inspired by the decade’s greatest tunes, this feel-good show celebrates friendship, romance, and second chances.

Don’t miss this vibrant, toe-tapping journey that will leave you smiling long after the curtain falls.

Harold’s Cross Tallaght Musical Society’s production of ‘The Wedding Singer’ is directed by Sean McMahon, with musical direction by Dermot O’Callaghan, and choreography by Lauren Dooley.

This week, we sat down with Aoife Small, who plays Julia in ‘The Wedding Singer’, which performs in the Civic Theatre from November 10 to 14.

What have the Harold’s Cross Tallaght Musical Society been up to this year? I understand you performed one-act plays in the Tallaght Theatre in May; how did they go?

It’s been a busy year, full of fundraisers, behind-the-scenes work and our One Act Plays.

We are so grateful to get the chance to stage these plays in The Tallaght Theatre.

This year was our third year staging our one-act plays.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase all our talented members and some friends of the society in a variety of comedic, heartwarming and thought provoking pieces in an evening of theatre.

Keep an eye on our social media for details of our 2027 plays, which will likely run in the summer months.

What inspired the group to do an adaptation of ‘The Wedding Singer’ this year? Were they already familiar with the story?

‘The Wedding Singer’ has been on our shortlist of show choices for years!

This year we finally bit the bullet and secured the rights in January 2026.

The film adaptation, although not a musical, is full of humour, fun and cheese, staring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

The musical is the same endearing storyline with some added 80’s-style bangers and dancing!

It is full of energy, outrageous comedy, and joyful celebration of love, and our cast have been flat out bopping away at rehearsals.

What have been some of the highlights of working on this production so far?

We have had a ball rehearsing for this energetic show!

Our cast have been kept busy with lots of dance routines, beautiful harmonies and dramatic scene work.

The laughter we’ve had watching the scenes unfold and being smack bang in the middle of the drama has been a real highlight.

What have been some of the challenges involved so far, and how have you navigated them?

The amount of musical numbers in the show is high; even though rehearsals have been a lot of fun, they’ve been busy!

There will be a lot of fast-paced costume changes as we delve into all things 80’s on stage, leaving our cast with a lot to organise and plan for our week in The Civic.

We can’t wait – the brighter the coloured costumes, the more fun we will end up having!

What is next for the group? Do they have any plans beyond 2026?

Keep an eye on our social media for updates on fundraisers and events.

We have a variety of different performances and activities in the pipeline, having previously staged concerts of Musical Moments, Bingo Cabaret, Race Nights, and One Act Plays.

What are you hoping will be the audience’s biggest takeaway from the show?

We hope our audience are bopping along in their seats, feeling all sorts of 80’s nostalgia, having a laugh and feeling the love!

Who would you like to thank for helping to make this production possible?

We’d like to thank our wonderful production team, our talented and hard-working cast, all the staff at our “stage home”, The Civic, our sponsors, patrons and, of course, the support of our future audiences.

We can’t wait to share the neon-soaked, big-haired world of ‘The Wedding Singer’ with you!
