Harris promises ‘new energy’ as he becomes Taoiseach

FINE Gael leader Simon Harris is the new Taoiseach, after being elected in the Dáil by 88 votes to 69.

Following his election, Mr Harris was later this afternoon formally appointed Taoiseach by President Michael D Higgins, who presented him with his warrant of appointment and seal of office at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Mr Harris has become the 16th Taoiseach, and the youngest at the age of 37.

Speaking following his election, the Wicklow TD said: “I accept this new role in a spirit of humility, ready for the challenge and full of energy and determination about what can be achieved.

“As Taoiseach, I want to bring new ideas, a new energy and, I hope, a new empathy to public life.

“But politics is never about the office holder, this is not about me.

“It’s about all of us, all of us working together to serve the people”.

Speaking on RTE One this afternoon, Dublin MEP and former Dublin Mid-West Fine Gael TD, Frances Fitzgerald reacted to Simon Harris’ first speech as Taoiseach.

“I think [Simon Harris] will be a humble Taoiseach but there’s no doubt the office will test him, as it does every Taoiseach”, Ms Fitzgerald said.

“It’s full of highs, full of lows.”

She added: “It’s an extraordinarily challenging time both in Ireland and Europe.

“We have war in Europe, we have inflation, we have social challenges.

“But we have a good economy, and many would say we’re dealing with some of those challenges better than many are dealing with them.

“We have the strength to go forward but nobody could underestimate the challenges and short timeframe that Simon Harris is facing as well.”
