Helping to combat racism and celebrate cultural diversity in Ireland

By William O'Connor

TO MARK European Week against Racism Week, the Social Inclusion Unit of South Dublin County Council hosted a competition to combat racism and celebrate the cultural diversity of people living in Ireland today.

March 21 is Inter-national Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

european week

This day has been declared by the UN as a reaction to the murder of 70 anti-apartheid demon-strators in Sharpville, South Africa in 1960.

The idea behind this competition was to ask children, young people and adults living here in South Dublin County to convey their own personal message against racism.

One of the main objectives of the council is to facilitate initiatives to promote integration in the county.

A willingness to learn about different cultures and to communicate with others is the key to a successful, fair and open society.

The winning slogan was designed by Julia McCall, St Mac Dara’s Community College.

A prize was presented to her by Mayor Sarah Holland on Tuesday in the school.

The winning slogan has been circulated in sticker format to all primary schools, secondary schools and youth clubs in the county as part of our awareness campaign on racism.
