Hoops issue ‘indefinite bans’ from Tallaght Stadium following fireworks incident at the RSC last night

SHAMROCK Rovers Football Club has condemned the actions of two individuals who caused “reputational damage” to the club after they set off fireworks on the pitch, promising an indefinite ban from the Tallaght Stadium.

A number of fireworks were set off over the pitch 15 minutes in at the RSC during the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division game against Waterford FC on Friday, October 5.

One man was injured in the incident and was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries which are said to be non-life threatening.

The players from both sides ran to take cover and shielded themselves as the fireworks detonated above the pitch and sparks rained down on them.

Referee Rob Hennessy halted the game and removed the players from the pitch for their safety.

Arrests were made at the scene and two men were taken to Waterford Garda Station and have since been released. Gardaí said that investigations are ongoing in relation to the incident.

In a statement this morning, Shamrock Rovers said that they “unequivocally condemn” the actions of the two men, stating that they will be issuing “indefinite bans” to the people involved from attending Tallaght Stadium.

They said: “The two individuals were arrested by Gardaí at the scene and taken from the ground. The club will cooperate fully with the Gardaí on any follow-up matters and will also be issuing indefinite bans from attending Tallaght Stadium to the people concerned.

“It is regrettable that the actions of two individuals caused reputational damage to the club and was not reflective of the atmosphere and support from the large away crowd of over 350 Hoops fans who supported the team throughout, enjoying a 3-1 away win.”
