The Dubliner started circuit racing in the Fiat Uno class before moving into the Punto and then Abarth Championships in which he enjoyed success on Leinster Trophy Day.

It was while racing in the Vauxhall Nova of his very close friend Declan Kelly that he first made his presence felt in Irish rallycross after which he stormed to Rallycar success in the Mitsubishi Evo 8.

A serious competitor in the Supercar field with no shortage of overall wins and many podium finishes, Greene was a much-loved character in Mondello Park.

“He loved the craic and the bit of comradery in the rallycross” recalled his good friend Declan Kelly.

“He had time for everybody and helped a lot of people in the sport. He was a very modest man and would thank everyone after a race because our sport depends a lot on so many volunteers and he really appreciated that.

“He was a good family man and a good friend. “We’ve really lost a good one. Everyone in rallycross and, further afield, in motorsport is just devastated” he said.

Irish Rallycross paid tribute to Noel, posting “The Irish Rallycross community are in deep shock after learning of the passing of Noel Greene.

“Noel was an absolute gentleman in the paddock and he will be greatly missed on the grid.

“Our deepest condolences to Noel’s wife and family at this difficult time.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.”
