January Team of the Month: Three Rock Rovers men’s hockey team

THREE Rock Rovers men’s hockey team were pushed to the limit but retained their National Indoor Trophy with a dramatic win over Railway Union in Galway’s Kingfisher Hall.

For Three Rock’s men, they trailed 3-2 going into the final quarter but goals from James Walker, Jody Hosking and Ben Ryder saw them turn things around against Railway.

James Kyriakides and Ross Canning had given them the advantage at half-time but Railway stormed back to build a lead going into the final 10 minutes.

For Rovers, their eventual win was their third title in succession and seventh in the last eight seasons in Ireland.

Since then, Three Rock Rovers came agonisingly close to a top four spot from the men’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Plzeň, eventually having to settle for seventh overall from the second tier competition.

On the domestic front the Rathfarnham side have marched on in the Irish Senior Cup following their 5-3 win over UCD last weekend.

Rovers are the only non-Ulster side left in the competition, which is the world’s oldest hockey cup competition

The Active South Dublin Sports Awards are run in association with The Echo, and supported by South Dublin County Council and The Plaza Hotel, Tallaght.
