Joy for St Mary’s ladies in final
ST MARYS Saggart ladies footballers secured back to back promotions as they defeated St Kevin’s Kilian’s to win the Division 11 cup final on Wednesday.
It was the sixth time the sides have met this season, and the third to have come in a final, with Kilian’s winning the previous two final clashes between the sides.
Kilian’s started the game the better of the two sides and notched an early goal to put Mary’s on the backfoot straight away.
Saggart clawed their way back into the game through brilliant work from Brona O’Mahony and Niamh Reilly, as they took a two-point lead heading into the break.
Kilian’s started the second half in much the same fashion as the first as they scored an early goal.
Once again Mary’s would get themselves back into the game through points from Aoife Duncan and Chloe Daly, before Kilian’s struck another major with less than ten minutes to go.
Against the odds, Saggart came back to level it and Ella O’Keefe, who is still eligible for minor level next year, stepped up to hit the winning score and secure the cup for her side.
After winning the league last year and nine minors joining the senior panel next season, St Mary’s will look to build on this position of strength in the years to come.
