July Sports Star of the Month: Rhasidat Adeleke
TALLAGHT Athletic Club’s Rhasidat Adeleke has, for the second time this year, been nominated for ‘The Echo 2021 Sports Star of the Year’ Award, following an unforgettable month in July that saw her win a 100m and 200m sprint double at the European Under 20 Championships in Tallinn.
With a new Irish 200m record to boot, it represented another major milestone for the 18-year-old who currently races with University of Texas.
She ignited a remarkable weekend in the Estonian capital when she stormed to a superb victory in the 100m, racing home ahead of closest challengers Ivana Ilic (11.42) of Serbia and Great Britain’s Joy Eze (11.44).
The following day the former Presentation Community College, Terenure student blitzed the field in the 200m final, comfortably seeing off the challenge of Minke Bisschops (Netherlands) and Success Eduan (Great Britain) to become the first athlete since Jodie Williams a decade ago to win a 100m and 200m double at the European Under 20s.
