THE Ballyfermot grandfather who was knocked down after being struck by a car at the weekend is fighting for his life.
Joe Byrne (86) was rushed to hospital after being struck by a car on his way home from the pub at around midnight on Sunday.
He suffered extensive injuries and is currently under care at St James Hospital.
Gardai have stated that it was a tragic accident, but not suspicious in the manner in which it happened.
Joe’s granddaughters have spoken of their heartache in the wake of the accident.
Dancing with the Stars professional Karen Byrne said her grandfather inspired her to a career in dance.
The pain we are all going through is horrific,” said Karen, who appeared on the RTÉ show partnered with Des Cahill.
“To get to the age of 86 with good health and then be struck by a car after having a few pints is just a living nightmare. We are all praying he will pull through this.”
Dublin City councillor Nial Ring, said it is unlikely his Uncle Joe will survive the incident, and that he underwent significant surgery since the accident.
“He has always been a fit man. He was a butcher all of his life so he is very fit from working in slaughter houses,” said Cllr Ring.
