Kishoge train station could take another six months to open for commuters

KISHOGE train station, which has been lying dormant since its construction 14 years ago, will not open at the end of the year as planned.

Cllr Derren Ó Brádaigh (SF) received a response from the National Transport Authority on Monday, confirming it could take another six months for the station to open.

“Iarnród Eireann has undertaken a tender process to appoint contractors to complete works required to open the station. This involves discussions with the council and relevant landowners to discuss the temporary and permanent access arrangements to the station, with anticipated tenders still to be awarded,” said Ó Brádaigh, who believes residents won’t see the station open until Spring 2024.

Completed in 2009, Kishoge cost more than

€6 million to build and was intended to serve a new community of up to 15,000 homes at the Clonburris Strategic Development Zone (SDZ).

The station is on the Kildare line between Clondalkin and Adamstown.

In January, Irish Rail said extensive works were needed to bring the station into service, include meeting present-day accessibility and systems requirements which are above and beyond the original requirements, replacement and repairs associated with wear and tear and vandalism.

“The population of Lucan has increased dramatically, continues to grow and is expected to rise significantly in the immediate to longer term,” said Cllr Ó Brádaigh.

“This is a vital piece of infrastructure. The construction of Clonburris Phase One situated closest to this very facility off the R136 is due to commence very shortly and it is now an imperative that this hugely important transport facility opens ahead of the completion of these homes.”
