Lions weather Rovers revival

DUBLIN LIONS have taken second place outright in the Men’s Division One Northern Conference after they weathered a late revival by Tolka Rovers to win out 59-57 in Colaiste Bride on Saturday.

It was the northsiders who made the brighter start, racing into a 17-11 lead by the close of the first quarter.

But the Clondalkin side turned it all around in the second thanks in no small part to great offensive play by Igor Markiewicz and American Garrett Collins together with excellent defence by Tomasz Swiatowy, who helped put the breaks on Tolka Rovers’ American Justin Goldsborough.

Indeed, they had overtaken into a 12-point lead by the halftime break and they continued on to extend that to 16 in the third quarter.

Yet the wheels began to come off for Lions in the final period during which Collins was fouled out along with Tolka’s Alex Dolenko, but the hosts held out to make it four wins on the trot.

On another note Dublin Lions Under 13 Boys emerged victorious from the Cork Invitational Tournament for the second year in succession.

The tournament which involved 12 top sides from around the country in three groups of four saw the Clondalkin side remain unbeaten throughout their campaign, seeing off Templeogue in the decoder.

This team has also enjoyed a strong start to their league campaign, winning their opening two matches.
