Locals intervene after GAA pitch damaged by fire

A local GAA club have slammed the actions of a group of teenagers after they set fire to material on the GAA pitch in Kilnamanagh last night.

The incident comes just days after St Kevin's/Kilian’s GAA Club hosted a very successful Mini All-Ireland tournament for children in the area on the pitch.

The fire on Monday night, which the club say was started by “a few mindless teenagers” was eventually extinguished by club members and local residents.

In a post last night, a club spokesperson for St Kevin's/Kilian’s said: “After our absolutely phenomenal weekend of events for the kids of Kilnamanagh and Kingswood, it is with frustration that we have to post the pics below.

“A few mindless teenagers (Kilnamanagh residents) have set fire to 'our' pitches this evening.”

The club went on to say that they will remain vigilant in the coming days and weeks, while they also noted damage which was done to the Kilnamanagh AFC soccer pitches in the estate recently.

Indeed, the spirit of sport was evident last night, with members of the local soccer club offering help in the way of sand and fertiliser to help repair the damaged pitch.

According to St Kevin’s/Kilian’s, the names of those involved have been passed onto Gardai.
