Lucan’s Minor A camogie team celebrate their Division 1 Championship success

Lucan make it three in a row

LUCAN’S Minor A Camogie side won the Division 1 Minor Championship for a third year in a row recently with a three point win over Clontarf in the final.

The final score in the game was 2-10 to 1-10 with goals from Eva Collis and Grace Birch being the difference makers on the day.

Collis in particular had an absolutely outstanding game managing a return of 1-10 but the entire team played superbly throughout not only the final but the tournament as a whole.

It was an extremely close game, an early goal for Lucan had them leading 1-02 to 0-01 after the first quarter however Clontarf did not go down quietly and battled back to make the scores even at 1-04 apiece for halftime.

It would be Clontarf who actually impressed most in the third quarter where they managed to drag themselves two points clear with the scoreline sat at 1-07 to 1-05.

It would now be on Lucan to show their own grit which they evidently had in spades.

‘A scoring spree over the next 10 minutes saw them take a five point lead with the score at 2-09 to 1-07 and while Clontarf rallied in the final minutes of the game it was too little too late as Lucan were crowned champions.

Coach Diarmuid Kennedy spoke on the performance in this year’s championship and what got them over the line.

“We did something different this year with team selection and mixed all of our players across our three minor teams.

‘We gave players time in playing with team A,B and C. It gave us a great opportunity to look at certain players.

‘That stood to us I suppose when it came to selection of the Championship team.”

“It’s huge, massive for the club and the players, families and management involved with them. They are a great bunch of players, a pleasure to be around and overall nice people. They work hard.”

“Going into the championship we had played a few different clubs around the country.

‘The difference there is that they wouldn’t have a minor panel a lot of the time so the teams would be minor and senior players. We played them and performed really well.

‘We learned an awful lot about the girls and I think that really helped us.”

This is the third year that Lucan have won the Minor Division 1 Championship which is a huge achievement for the players and the club overall.

With many players in the current team now with two Division 1 medals, there are even a select few who would have three, playing up an age group in the first Championship winning campaign.

Kennedy touched on what the future of camogie within Lucan looked like.

“You’d like to see that translating to a Senior Championship for the club.

‘We certainly have some incredible players heading into the senior section of the club.

‘We are very much looking forward to the future and seeing how that all unfolds.”
