Major changes planned for the Greenhills Road

Major changes planned for the Greenhills Road

By Maurice Garvey

INDEPENDENT Councillor Dermot Looney has welcomed news that long-awaited realignment road works on the Greenhills Road, Ballymount and Robinhood are back on the agenda.

The scheme, which aims to improve traffic flow was initially agreed back in 2006 and 2008 by South Dublin County Council.

Cllr Looney says this “was held back due to the lack of finances” and that he has sought to keep it on the agenda since his election in 2009.

Greenhills Road will see a major change in road configuration – from Tymon Lane beside the Cuckoos Nest to the existing Greenhills Road before Mayberry Road.

This part of the Greenhills Road is scheduled to be diverted across available green space towards Kilanamanagh – in between Birchview Avenue and Parkview – with the construction of a 13 metre wide carriageway.

The new road will include bus lanes in each direction for a distance of approximately 660 metres, the construction of an extension to Tymon North Road to the new realigned Greenhills Road, and the installation of cycletracks and footpaths, along with associated works.

News of the Part 8 realignment is met with uncertainty amongst some residents of the community, with concerns the works will lead to an exodus of people living in close proximity to the new layout.

Other residents have questioned what this will mean for access to existing green space, and what it means for the investment last year of new LED street lights on Greenhills Road.

Cllr Looney says the first part of the scheme will take place in 2016 to upgrade the junction between Ballymount Road Lower and Ballymount Avenue into a signal controlled four way junction.

“Anyone who uses these roads during peak times will note the problems at this junction and on adjoining roads,” he said.

Cllr Looney continued: “Other elements of the scheme involve the reconfiguration of the Greenhills and Calmount Roads near Tymon Park/Greenpark, the realignment of the Greenhills Road at Parkview in Kilnamanagh and the extension of Limekiln Road to the Greenhills Road.

“I have made clear that the extension of Limekiln Road, which has been on County Development Plans since the 1970’s – needs to be prioritised.”

“The Council have budgeted for €4 million over the next three years, with €1.35 million to be spent this year. This is in addition to the existing money spent on design and CPO’s. These are provided for through the council’s three year capital programme, meaning that the funds will come from development levies.”
